Hero Motocorp’s Plans For Future

After Hero parted its ways with Honda, it indeed became a tough task for the word’s largest two wheeler manufacturer to keep itself technically superior and to be on par with other Japanese giants. It also becomes mandatory for the company to keep up its sales figured besides the stiff competition Indian market faces.
The company has recently tied up with a few International Automotive companies for technological expertise that would be adapted in the Hero MotoCorp products. We’d earlier mentioned that the company is also planning to come up with high displacement bikes which might be as high as 1000cc ones in the near future.
The company is also planning to think beyond the two wheeler market, the way Bajaj Auto is operating. They’re already in the three – wheeler segment and with the coming up of RE60, they’ve forayed into the passenger car segment as well. Though, HMC has plans like this, we don’t really know what is the segment is tries to get into hands dusted upon with. This new segment will help the company in meeting a target of $10 billion turnover over a span of next 5 to 6 years.
When he was asked about the company’s tie up with Erik Buell Racing (EBR) Mr Pawan Munjal, MD & CEO of Hero MotoCorpseemed to be planning to make use of the company to come up with a bike in the 200cc segment for the Indian market. He said, “Though EBR does high-end bikes and has technology for high-performance, racing bikes, this can be adapted for mid-segment bikes beyond 200 cc. I feel they have lots of new ideas, I think I can talk to them about even 100 cc engines over time.”
The company would launch bikes which incorporates EBR’s technology by the next fiscal year. HMC is licensed to make use of Honda’s technology till 2014 and so these products would be blended with Honda’s engine technology for the first few years and then would completely shift to EBR’s technology. Mr. Munjal said, “We’re also working on completely new platforms with EBR, which would be launched by 2013-14.”
The company is also looking forward to get into tie ups with few other companies that would help Hero MotoCorp  to become superior when it comes to the technological front. He said, “We will not restrict ourselves to a single technology/ arrangement, but have multiple tie-ups with experts. To my mind, 3-4 (tie-ups) is a good number.”
The company wants external aid only when it comes to technological aspects and the engines that would be made use of in the HMC bikes. It feels that it is self – reliant when it comes to the design front. It feels it can sustain on the long run with it’s in – house team which has been working on the design concepts of Hero products.
Regarding this, he said, “With EBR we’re finding everything for a certain segment of bikes, with somebody else (AVL, Ricardo) we’re working on only engines. For styling, we have a fair amount of expertise within, yet we will be bringing in more resources. We will hire expats, since our customer is global; we will have to become a multinational as well.”
The company has started working on the 100 – 125cc engines as of now. We’d always been quoting the news that HMC is all set to launch low cost bikes in the price band of INR  30,000 – 40,000.
When he was asked on what other segments would the company foray into in the near future. He said, “There definitely is a vision to do that, but right now we’re focussing our energies on two-wheelers. There is a plan to diversify into other segments, maybe cars or commercial vehicles — though that’s a more mid and long-term strategy.”
Mr. Munjal is also trying hard to improve the relationship with the company.  He says, “I would think suppliers are very important. Going forward there would be synergies in various areas, which if they desire and works out well for both companies and the suppliers, there can be some arrangements.”
HMC, as many of us know is also eyeing to buy the Italian bike maker – Ducati. The company is trying to get the required financial aid to go ahead with clinching this deal. Regarding this issue, he said, “There are a few bankers who have been meeting two-wheeler makers like us for Ducati. Many people these days are approaching us since they know we’re in the market looking for tie-ups. We’re open to meeting as many people as is needed. There’s no situation where we’re in an advanced state of discussion with any one manufacturer or a banker. I can’t really say if we’re interested in the company or not.”
The company is on the process of getting itself re – branded as Hero MotoCorp from its earlier name of Hero Honda. We’re in fact so much used to the name Hero MotoCorp that Hero Honda sounds a little odd to me at this point of time. Mr. Munjal expects that the entire re – branding exercise would take another 6 months to one year’s time. He added, “The export markets are very important to us now, but we can’t produce two sets of products. They are little different from India, so the brand push needs new thinking. We want the brand change to be smooth.”

Mahindra Racing Wins at 125GP Italian Championship

It’s a proud moment for India as well as motorsport followers as Mahindra Racing became the first Indian company to register a win in any international motorsporting event.
Team Mahindra, which is represented by Riccardo Moretti and Sarath Kumar, kicked off the season on a high note at the 125GP Italian Championship when their ace rider Riccardo Moretti finished first at the opening race of the season.
Moretti had a strong run at the qualifiers the previous day and a swift start on the race day helped him gain that early momentum which took the lead from other riders. The end result was as fruitful as ever as Moretti had a lead of as much as 10 seconds when the remaining fleet of riders crossed the finish line.
Sarath Kumar also had a good run at the show but he had to retire following a technical glitch. This win puts Mahindra on a high and expect fireworks in the future races from this duo.
On the occasion an elated Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group said, “When we made our MotoGP debut in 2011, we dreamt of becoming the first Indian company team to win an international motorsport event. Mahindra Racing’s victory is thus, a triumph not only for the Mahindra Group but for Indian Motor sports. Riccardo’s strong showing is testimony to our strengths in the engineering and technology domains and has ensured greater equity for brand India and brand Mahindra across the globe.”
The MotoGP platform has also allowed us to showcase our two-wheeler technology and prove our engineering, design and endurance skills, along with the fact that we can compete with the best in the world,”
BikeAdvice wishes Mahindra Racing best of luck in all its future shots at the tarmac.

Suzuki Again Faces Labor Unrest

It seems Suzuki is back to the scene of labor unrest. The difference this time is that it is the motorcycle division Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) which has come to the limelight. Suzuki Motorcycles has suspended 3 union leaders in its Gurgaon plant for the same reason.
The suspended list includes Suzuki Motorcycles Employees Union (SMEU) Vice President Praminder Kumar, General Secretary Avinash Kumar and Secretary Gulshan Kumar. According to Suzuki’s Vice President (HR), Anil Munjal these three people have allegedly indulged in a scuffle with senior company officials and hence a disciplinary action of their suspension has been taken.
The Union’s point is different. They said that the company did not want to pay incentives to them and hence it is spoiling the atmosphere of the company. They were promised to be paid incentives in a maximum of 6 months but did not receive them. When they took the matter to the officials, they were abused.
It is not the first time that these kind of labor unrest has been reported in Gurgaon, a few years back Maruti had a rough time with its labor and we all remember the Honda’s infamous labor discontent issues.

HMSI to Spend Heavily on Brand Makeover

Country’s largest scooter manufacturer, Honda Motor Scooter India ltd. a subsidiary of world’s largest two wheeler manufacturer, Honda Motor Corporation of Japan is now all set to position its brand against country’s largest two wheeler maker Hero Motocorp. HMSI is said to spend at least Rs. 100 crores on its new advertising campaign which will launched by June across the media, according to a news reported by livemint.com. This is largest ad spend for this year by any auto maker. Last year, Hero Motocorp. spent Rs. 175 crores for its brand make over campaign.
A top executive at HMSI said on the condition of anonymity “The spend on the brand repositioning could be to the tune of at least aRs.100 crores.  This includes the payment to be made to the brand ambassadors, advertising and media buying firms.  The brand ambassador, who has not yet been chosen, will be paid about Rs.15-20 crores. This campaign is extremely crucial for Honda as it’s a first after their split with Hero, so it’s going to be a game changer for them in a sense that it will establish their individual identity through this, with the right kind of media and communications this campaign could be a huge success. I feel Hero should be worried.”
The new ad campaign will be targeted to the rural India and it will be aired in all regional Indian languages. The company will adopt its global tagline- Power of Dreams which it is using for its cars in Indian market. It will also appoint its brand ambassador in the country. The company has finalized two personalities from one is from cricket and one is from Bollywood. However, the company will chose only one as its brand ambassador.
An executive at “We have zeroed in on two prominent personalities—one each from cricket and Bollywood. However, the company wants to go with only one brand ambassador. A decision on that is likely to be taken soon. The move is aimed at Hero’s dominant position in the rural markets, which contribute 45% of revenue at the Munjal family firm. Honda’s penetration in the rural market is less than a third of Hero’s.
It seems that HMSI wants to breakthrough Hero’s dominance in rural India and if it is successful in doing so it will definitely become the number 1 two wheeler company of India.

Yamaha FZ16 Review by Aditya Bhat

Hi Guyz this is Aditya from Bangalore. I am currently doing my First year engg. I am here to share my love story between me and my bike (FZ-16). It all started in on Aug 12th 2011 when I got her home. Its been 2500 on the odo and still I love her the same way I did when I first got her. I always wanted to buy a bike since my high school.
My parents had told me that if I score well in my 2nd PUC, they would get me a bike of my choice. Since I scored well they agreed to buy me a bike. But the problem was, I didnt know how to ride one. Thanks to my best buddy sujith who helped me in learning to ride a bike by lending me his dad’s bike.
In just 15 days I was perfectly able to shift gears and drive comfortably. Since I had learnt how to ride a bike I went up to my parents and asked them to get me a bike, to which they happily agreed. It was now the decision time to choose my bike. Initially I was completely bent upon buying a Pulsar as I loved its looks and was almost about to book one.
But my cousin who works at bajaj told me not to buy one as he felt that the bike was not durable and even I felt that it was very common and nobody would notice me as Pulsars are like house hold bike. Then I thought of buying a hunk as I loved its design and curves, I dnt know what happened but I didnt want to buy it any more.
One day my best friend lent me his brother’s FZ to drive and get a feel of it, from the moment I sat on the bike I was sure that this was the right bike for me as it suited my requirements of good looks with quality. Even I had heard that yamaha bikes are durable with respect to parts. On july 30th I went to yamaha showroom and booked my dream machine and got it delivered on August 12th. From the day I took it till now I have not faced a single problem with my bike. I love my bike very much as it has made my commute to college very easy and even saved my life a couple of times.

Pros

  • Looks: Wise I think it is one of the best among 150cc bikes .
  • Mileage: When I bought this bike my friends told me that yamaha bikes are perol burners and would burn my pocket money with low mileage. Thankfully due to my maintainence and driving style its giving me 40+.
  • Brake: The brake needs a special mention as it provides superior braking compared to other bikes in this segment. Not even for a minute you feel scared to apply the front brakes when u want to stop from a high speed to zero.
  • Quality of Parts: The paint job on this is very good, even after 8 months it still looks brand new when you wipe of the dust on it.
  • Maintainence: Till now now I have not spent an extra penny on maintainence apart from regular servicing cost.
  • Handling: This bike has got an amazing handling due to its fat rear tyre which is biggest among 150cc bike. Even on a high speed curve the bike remains planted on the road giving you immense confidenceto take a curve without any fear.
As every bike is not perfect even my bike has some Cons. They are It has got a small pillion seat when compared to other bikes in this segment. The pillion rider cannot sit for long due to the small seat. I Feel that initial pickup is not as good when compared to apache but after 4K RPM there is no stopping it .
Ifeel this is purposely done keeping the safety of the driver in mind and sudden initial pickup is dangerous sometimes as u might not be able to control the bike. Apart from the above things I dont find any issues with my bike.
Finally to wrap up I would like to tell you that treat your bike well and it will in turn bring a smile on your face when you ride it by not causing any troubles. I love my bike so much that I wipe it daily before taking out to college and because of that my bike still looks brand new and my friends are really envious about my bike which in turn brings a smile on my face.
So love your bike and maintain it well and do wear a helmet without fail everytime you ride your bike. Finally I would like to apologise if I have bored you through my article and the opinions in this article is my personal one so I dont intend to hurt anybody’s feeling through it. Thank you for reading my love story and I whole heartedly welcome your suggestions on my article
